What is Web 2.0 and How can It Help Me?

Have you ever wanted to create your own internet presence? It's now easy for anyone to do just that thanks to the power of Web 2.0. No longer do you need to be a programmer or computer whiz.

First up a quick background on what Web 2.0 is and then how you too can build a web presence for free!

Web 2.0 really rose out of the ashes of the Dot Com collapse in late 2001. Prior to that the 'web' had, to a large extent, been controlled by the traditional commercial enterprises. Those with money that, at that time could afford the cost of domain registration and teams of programmers to create their sites.

The term 'Web 2.0' wasn't coined until three years later in 2004 in a meeting between Tim 'Reilly and Dale Dougherty. New technologies such as blogs, social bookmarking, wikis, podcasts and RSS feeds are just a few of the technologies that are helping to shape and direct Web 2.0.

The Web before the dot com crash is often referred to as Web 1.0 now but only since the coining of the term Web 2.0.

Some of the more obvious difference between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 are: DoubleClick replaced by Google AdSense, Britannica Online replaced by Wikipedia, Personal Web Pages replaced by Blogs, Content Management Systems replaced by Wikis and Directories replaced by Tagging.

These are only a very few of the differences between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 but they are major ones.

You will notice, if you look carefully that the commonality of many of the differences between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 is that Web 1.0 was driven and controlled by the 'powers-that-be' and Web 2.0 is driven by users.

That is a huge difference and the one that is making Web 2.0 more and more user friendly not to mention more and more profitable for just average people. You might even call it a power shift of gigantic proportions.

Blogs are at the forefront of Web 2.0. There are all the social sites but basically they are just another medium for blogging with various other features built in.

Thanks to all the social sites and others like blogger.com and wordpress.com anyone can create a blog for free. There's no need to register a domain name, pay for hosting or have any technical skills what so ever.

Where you would have created a website previously, to promote an affiliate product, with all the technical overheads that go along with that plus the costs, it can all now be done for free and with
no technical knowhow at all.

There are other advantages too. It's well known that blogs get ranked quicker in the search engines. The free blog platforms get ranked quicker than other blogs, Google loves them!

The free blogging platforms are so easy to use that it is entirely possible to create and publish a blog based site in under an hour.

This is really powerful, as anyone can create and publish a blog based site with no prior experience. Many of the free blogging platforms make it easy to monetise the site and start you on the road to your own internet business empire.

This is the essence of Web 2.0. It has brought the internet to the man and woman in the street. It is no longer the private domain of the professional.

So, there you are. To have your own website, indeed multiple websites that can actually provide you with an income while you sleep, is now entirely possible thanks to Web 2.0.

So what are you waiting for? As a well known advertising campaign says: Just Do It!
